The Story of the /RACK/ | Design, Craftsmanship
It all began when a hi-fi store in Germany commissioned a statement piece to display vinyl records at checkout. The brief was simple: something large, eye-catching, and functional.
The idea came quickly. I envisioned a sleek bar along which solid walnut feet and dividers could glide freely. No fixed positions, no fasteners — just clean lines, guided by gravity. Every measurement followed the golden ratio, scaled from the size of a vinyl sleeve, giving the design its naturally balanced feel.
Building it, however, was another story. Concerned that the /RACK/might be top-heavy, I brought in an engineer. After endless design adjustments, the final structure met every standard of stability, strong enough to hold a full rack of records — or even a person.
What I thought would be a short project stretched into a year of challenges: sourcing a perfectly straight steel bar, achieving flawless sliding tolerances in the feet, and balancing divider angles so the tops remained level. There were failed prototypes, missed deadlines, and long nights — but the result was worth it.
The final design combined brushed stainless steel and rich walnut wood. The wooden components aren’t screwed or fixed; they slide into place, held by weight and precision. No hardware — just two beautiful materials held in place by gravity. Originally a one-off, the /RACK/ quickly gained interest.
This momentum inspired the launch of a full modular furniture line, expanding from vinyl storage to hi-fi audio furniture and custom DJ booths. Today, the /RACK/ embodies the perfect balance of functionality, sleek design, and craftsmanship — made for audiophiles and creative professionals alike.
